The Value of the Vision

by Cherryll Sevy, CMC

In today’s challenging economy and strained resources, can you afford to allow 1/3 of your employees to be disengaged and underperforming? Consider also, as the economy improves, nearly half of them would leave if they could and many will. Here are 3 ideas to re-energize and engage your organization and improve performance.

  1. Have and share the company’s vision.
Employees all need to know they are part of something bigger and they contribute to a higher purpose. Do you design software or create solutions offering people more time to do what they love? Are you laying bricks or building castles? Employees need a clear line of sight to the company’s business goals and know how they contribute to them.
Action: Review, revise and communicate your Vision to everyone.
  2. Create a Higher Performance System for your company.
An effective system offers guidelines, tools and a plan to achieve desired results. Engaged, inspired employees understand their role and relationship within the group; receive coaching and mentoring; participate fully in the performance/results/feedback loop, as well as help design and implement their own Personal Learning Plan. Tap into the “discretionary” performance—that “extra effort” contributed by employees who love what they do and understand why they do.
Action: Review your Performance Management program to identify weaknesses and seek to improve it.
  3. Make it fun!
Create a more energetic and enthusiastic culture at work. Recognize and reward successes, even the small ones. What we focus on expands! People passionate about what they do, how they impact outcomes, and enjoy their workplace are more far more likely to be engaged, inspired to do more and do it better.
Action: Set up a Good Times Team to create more community and find ways to connect one another in non-work task ways.
