It's "summertime and the livin' is easy"!  At least that's what the song says. Things certainly don't feel easy as we listen to the news or hear of people we care about still out of work.  The good news is there are many things we can do right now to improve our work and personal lives.  I know I feel better when I have a sense of control, and our articles in this ezine discuss things we can control.  All relationships in our lives require effective communication skills, especially those in the workplace.  Toss in today's challenge of four generations in the workplace and the impact of social media, no wonder we feel both overwhelmed and inadequate.  We've also included a brief checklist to ensure your insurance documents reflect what you want.   Both, hopefully will make your summertime and livin' a little easier!

what happens to you, and in that, you will be
mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.

Challenges in Communication Today - Generations and Social Media

by Cherryll Sevy

I'm an Expressive/Influencer Baby Boomer!  Labels - pick one. Why labels and why do we care?  Labels are one way we sort the world, identify with similarities in others, otherwise it could become overwhelming.  They can be useful and save time, helping us maneuver through the world.  But, they can be inaccurate, limiting, and at their worst discriminatory.  There is much written and discussed about the four generations in the workplace today and the challenge to management.  Many problems are brought about by labels and descriptions we've assigned to each generation.  True understanding and acceptance of another beyond labels creates a richness in families and communities, so why not in the workplace?

This morning I communicated with all four generations differently.  I wrote a letter to my (WWII Generation) 84-year-old mother; called a (Baby Boomer) friend on my cell phone; texted my (Gen Y) son; and emailed my (Gen X) Virtual Assistant, all before 9 am!  I seem to move smoothly along the communication super-highway, as I'm sure many others do as well.  I've found the best methods for communicating with each individual, is to send the information to the person in their preferred communication style.

 What's in Your Desk Drawer?

by Marc Haberman

Did you throw your insurance policies in a desk drawer or a file cabinet years ago and haven't bothered to review them for years?  When it comes to life insurance planning, this can be an extremely costly mistake, and may mean our loved ones will have to do with less or go without.

Here are six common mistakes to avoid:
  1. The Insured's estate is named as beneficiary.
Naming your estate as the beneficiary may expose the proceeds to probate, or to creditors or unnecessary taxes.  It may also result in claims by unintended beneficiaries.

Recommended Action:  Review beneficiary designations of all life insurance policies, including group coverage, to ensure they are current and accurately name the organizations or persons you want.
